The Holiday season normally tends to be one of the most stressful parts of the year, which is ironic, because we would assume it to be the happiest time of the year. There isn’t a slightest thought in my mind that Christmas time wasn’t always like this. I haven’t done my research so don’t quote me on this, but I do believe that we made it into something we worship/idolize (just being honest here), which is why we stress so much during this season.
We stress about presents.
We stress about food.
We stress about finances.
We literally stress about everything.
And that’s not what this season is about.
I can honestly say that in past years, I too have idolized Christmas. My husband and I have spent up to $500-$600 in presents before and quiet honestly, that’s pretty ridiculous. I’m not saying that giving gifts is bad, because it’s not. But the going broke to make sure your kids have the best presents ever is not what Christmas is about.
So how can you stress less during the holidays?
STOP SPENDING HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS ON GIFTS
FOCUS ON THE REAL REASON FOR THE SEASON
“For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us. He will bear the responsibility to rule. He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6
Jesus is the reason for the season. I know that sound’s cliché, but it’s the truth. If Jesus would’ve never been born on this earth, we would have nothing to celebrate right now. He is the reason we get to celebrate and show love and appreciate to those around us. But not only to them, but to Jesus himself! The man who obeyed the Father, came to earth as a man, lived a Holy life in the middle of a sinful word, and died for our sins. That is reason enough to focus on him during this holiday season.
I can speak on this freely because this was me just last year; I didn’t focus on Jesus for Christmas. I started advent readings and stopped them. I didn’t fully teach my kids the reason why we even have Christmas. He was not my priority at all. But something shifted for me this year and as I grew closer to Jesus, I knew that this Christmas had to be different.
When we focus on the real reason we celebrate Christmas, we tend to take a different approach on the spending. I know I have. This year, Since Thanksgiving, we have been focusing on growing closer to God, learning more about the Son, and growing in our faith. You know homeschool, so for the month of Decemeber, we are primarily focusing on an Advent curriculum, focusing on learning about the birth of Jesus and who he was and continues to be. Also, we decided on only getting one gift for each of ours kids (they’ll probably get gifts from family members anyway), making sure we give Jesus the gift of time and appreciation, and going out to make memories by doing fun and meaningful things.
Don’t stress yourself out on meaningless things this holiday. Stop stressing over things that don’t really matter, and focus on Jesus. Set your sight on Him. When you do this, you will be able to fully enjoy and appreciate the time you spend with your loved ones, cozied up at home.
